  • Guided Tour - Enjoy a guided tour of one of the oldest buildings in St. John's with one of our knowledgeable interpreters. The Commissariat was built between 1818-1820 as the home and offices of the Assistant Commissary General - the supply officer for British forces in Newfoundland. Learn more about the British military presence in Newfoundland.
  • Impress with a Quill Pen - Can you write with a feather? The Officers of the Commissary could. Until the mid to late nineteenth century, most writing was done this way. Have a seat in the general office in Commissariat House and try it for yourself. Dip your feather in the ink to write your name or draw a picture. If you're feeling adventurous, try writing a letter then sealing it with wax.
  • Life in the 1830s - Commissariat House offers a series of engaging activities for kids and adults alike. See if anything is cooking in our historic kitchen or help out in the historic vegetable garden. Curl up in the sunroom to explore toys and games from the past like dominos. And don't forget to take a selfie dressed in the fashion of the period and share with us on social media.
  • Crafts in the Carriage House - Drop by the Carriage House and get creative! Create a shadow puppet and put off a show. Or make a mobile using a variety of materials. Or maybe create your own letter seal! See what we're making today!
